Language Translation vs Localization

Translation

Translation converts content from one language to another. This process make sure that the language used in appropriate to the context and error free. In translation, some expressions are slightly different to flow naturally in the target language, but the meaning is the same.

Translation document types include technical, scientific, financial, legal, etc

Translators often take the text from the content one chunk at a time and do the conversion. These chunks are usually units of meaning and short enough to stay in the short term memory. They go through the translated content and compare it to the original bit by bit. Localization

Process of adapting your content and applications for consumption in a specific region

Localization basically means adapting a product or service into another language, culture, and local market. It is a more involved process. It goes beyond simply transcribing content into another language. Localization makes the document culturally relevant and appropriate.

E.g. Certain languages do not work in certain jokes, either because the way words are structured or because of some of the context that comes around them.

The process often includes changes to the content’s visual aesthetic to page layouts, communication style, and the way content is accepted. In essence, it is process of comprehensive adaptation.

You will need to consider the characteristics of the market you hope to reach when choosing to translate or localize your content.
